American Sign Language Class

Level 1 Class

This class introduces the basics of American Sign Language (ASL) and is designed for students who have little or no previous knowledge of ASL. The course will include ABC's and numbers, basic vocabulary and light conversation. Information about the Deaf Community and Deaf Culture will be introduced. Instructor, Hillary Krokonko

Cost: $60 per person, $30 per person if you have a family member in the CAIU Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program (DHH)

Level 2 Class

This class assumes that the participant has acquired basic skills taught in an introductory course. The course will continue vocabulary development. Level II will also introduce classifiers, directionality, and some basic ASL grammar. Instructor, Hillary Krokonko

Level II Optional DVD: Progressive Fingerspelling. Available for purchase on the first night of class for $13 or online at aslinmotion.com

 

Conversation/Level 3-4 Class

This class will focus on using ASL in conversation. It is designed for those who have completed levels 1 and 2 and would like more exposure to American Sign Language. Topics covered will include  classifiers, non-manual markers, idioms, and ASL grammar within conversational topics. 

Cost: $60 per person, $30 per person if you have a family member in the CAIU Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program (DHH)

Educators Seeking Act 48 Credit: Act 48 credit will be offered upon successful completion of each level. All necessary information must be provided. Student cannot miss more than one class. At the conclusion of the class, CAIU will submit your hours to the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE).

Reimbursement Requests: If you are requesting reimbursement from your employer, it is your responsibility to complete all necessary paperwork and follow procedures as outlines by your Intermediate Unit, district, or employer. 

Practice Opportunities: We meet the first Friday of every month at Wegman's Market Cafe at 7:00 PM. Additional practice opportunities may be shared by your instructor. For more information contact Don Gordon at aslsocial4pa@gmail.com.
