Guest Teacher Program

The Capital Area Intermediate Unit (CAIU) is excited to announce that we are now providing an asynchronous guest teacher course.

How the Program Works

Upon completion of the course, guest teachers will be able to apply for an emergency permit through the PA Department of Education, which will allow them to be a substitute teacher in the schools and/or districts the CAIU serves. Instructions for applying on PDE’s Teacher Information Management System (TIMS) will be emailed to you upon successful completion of the guest teacher course.

Note: The guest teacher training is designed for those who would like to substitute in more than one district. If you are interested in only subbing in one school or district, please check with that school/district to determine what its specific requirements are for being a substitute.

Qualifications

To qualify as a guest teacher, participants must hold at least a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and be able to work in a PA public school (see PDE 6004 for list of exclusions).

Cost

Cost is $80.00, which includes the cost of the asynchronous course and obtaining your emergency permit. Payment will be made when you register for the training via Frontline.  You must pay using a credit/debit card.

Checklist of Requirements

Prior to registering for the course, you are required to submit the following items via email or regular mail (preferably in one single email or packet labeled Guest Teacher Application) to Kaitlin Swisher, email: kswisher@caiu.org  mail: 55 Miller Street, Enola, PA 17025:

 GUEST TEACHER RENEWALS

ATTENTION FOREIGN-EDUCATED APPLICANTS:

The public-school code in Pennsylvania requires that a teacher of non-foreign language subjects (including "guest" teachers) must either be a United States citizen or a lawful permanent resident (green card holder) in order to be issued a Type 06 day-to-day emergency substitute permit. If you are not a lawful permanent resident (green card holder), you will not be approved as a day-to-day substitute teacher. In addition, you must have a credential evaluation done by an approved agency to show that your foreign credentials are equal to a bachelor's degree in the United States.
