Guest Teacher Program

The Capital Area Intermediate Unit (CAIU) does not have any guest teacher trainings scheduled at this time. Please check the website often for any updates.

How the Program Works

Upon completion of the course, guest teachers will be able to apply for an emergency permit through the PA Department of Education, which will allow them to be a substitute teacher in the schools and/or districts the CAIU serves.

Note: The guest teacher training is designed for those who would like to substitute in more than one district. If you are interested in only subbing in one particular school or district, please check with that school/district to determine what its specific requirements are for being a substitute.

Qualifications

To qualify as a guest teacher, participants must hold at least a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and be able to work in a PA public school (see PDE Form 6004 for list of exclusions). Participants must be present and complete both days of training in order to obtain an emergency permit.

Cost

Cost is $80.00, which includes the cost of the two-day training and obtaining your emergency permit. Payment must be received prior to the day of the training.

Lunch will be one hour on your own (NOT provided as part of the training).

Checklist of Requirements

On your first day of training, registration will begin at 7:30 a.mm and you MUST bring with you:

  1. A completed PA Standard Teacher Application (the written essay must be completed).

  2. Your resume.

  3. Your official, sealed bachelor’s transcript (this means sealed by the university with an official seal and presented to the CAIU unopened).

  4. All three clearance RESULTS (as described below).

  5. A completed PDE Form 6004.

  6. A completed Health Record Form (standard physical) and a TB TEST which cannot be more than 90 days old. The Health Record Form, including immunization records, must be completed in its entirety. As for the TB test, if your physician asks, the “simple” TB test is all that is required.

These six items will be collected at the door and participants will NOT be allowed into the training if they do not present ALL of these documents.

ATTENTION FOREIGN-EDUCATED APPLICANTS:

The public school code in Pennsylvania requires that a teacher of non-foreign language subjects (including "guest" teachers) must either be a United States citizen or a lawful permanent resident (green card holder) in order to be issued a Type 06 day-to-day emergency substitute permit. If you are not a lawful permanent resident (green card holder), you will not be approved as a day-to-day substitute teacher. In addition, you must have a credential evaluation done by an approved agency to show that your foreign credentials are equal to a bachelor's degree in the United States.
