The Capital Area Intermediate Unit (CAIU) stands as the educational hub of a thriving Capital region, modeling belonging through a culture of dignity for all students and staff - regardless of their race, color, religion, ancestry, gender, sexual orientation, gender expression or identity, national origin, or ability. We support the development of schools that stand as safe havens where all people feel welcomed and safe. We use our essential voice in public education to inspire others to challenge their thinking, dismantle systemic inequities, and encourage all to be ardent advocates for social justice.

Equitable access to learning and opportunity requires that we continuously strive to provide a safe and supportive learning environment for all students, in which we ensure the use of data practices that advance our commitment to academic equity as well as our obligation to safeguard access and opportunity for all students, ensuring that there are culturally relevant practices and evidence-based approaches in place.
  3. We recognize and value parents/families as part of our educational community. Key to our collective success is the practice of engaging in collaborative internal and external partnerships that support the emerging needs of students, families, staff, and the communities in which we live and work.
  4. Building our own capacity and self-awareness is the foundation upon which we build individual and organizational cultural humility. It is the continuous practice of examining our own thoughts and blind spots. Seeking first to understand, engaging in earnest dialogue, and actively listening are keys to challenging our assumptions and to understanding those who are different from us. This includes reflective opportunities to challenge our own system in acknowledging and mitigating operational barriers.
