The goal of the Driver's Education program is to teach young people to be safe and reponsible drivers. To achieve this goal, the CAIU offers Classroom Instruction and Behind-the-Wheel Instruction as part of the driver education services.
Classroom Instruction
- Includes information dissemination, skill training and decision-making.
- Occurs at Harrisburg Academy
- Schedule is 2 nights per week plus 3-4 hours on Saturdays
- Provided by CAIU certified Driver Education Teacher
- 30 hours of instruction required
Behind-the-Wheel Instruction
The learning experiences presented through practice driving in a real car in everyday traffic are experiences necessary to develop a safe and efficient driver. CAIU offers two options for Behind-the-Wheel instruction.
Option 1 involves a written agreement between the Intermediate Unit and an individual school district. The district agrees to allow the students to participate in the Behind-the-Wheel (BTW) training provided by CAIU employees with no financial obligation on the part of the district. The students/families are obligated to pay the applicable fee. The service is provided at various locations, depending on the district.
Option 2 involves a written contract with an individual school district. The district agrees to pay for the Behind-the-Wheel training provided by CAIU employees to the eligible students in that district. The service is provided at the contracting district's site.
For either option:
- Schedule varies according to availability of the students
- BTW instruction occurs in 1-hour increments
- 6 hours of instruction are required
