The Intensive Learning Support Program provides an alternative program for elementary/middle school age students with language-based learning problems and a need for special education. The primary focus of the program is on the development of reading skills. A variety of multi-sensory approaches are utilized to meet individual student needs. Language development and learning strategies will be integrated across all areas. Individual reading instruction will be provided on a daily basis, as well as necessary related services. Curriculum will include language arts, reading, mathematics and science. All course work will be integrated with language and reading instruction. Students will be assigned to the class for one school year with enrollment for a second year dependent on the recommendation of the IEP team.
Criteria for Eligibility:
Students enrolled for this full-time classroom placement must meet the following criteria:
- Average to above intellectual ability
- Diagnosis of learning disability with significant reading difficulties
Students referred to the Intensive Learning Support Program will receive a multidisciplinary evaluation/reevaluation from a psycho-educational team of professionals that includes the current teacher, a psychologist, and a speech and language clinician. Evaluation/reevaluation information will be used by the IEP team to determine the appropriateness of the Intensive Leaning Support Class to meet the identified strengths and needs of the student and to determine the language arts/reading system that will provide the student with instruction based on strengths and needs.
