The term assistive technology device means any item, piece of equipment, or product system whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of a child with a disability.

CAIU assistive technology consultants help teams from local school districts, hospital programs, and agencies develop and expand assistive technology services for students in the capital area. These assistive technology services include: assessing student needs; informing teams of assistive technology options; acquiring, customizing, and implementing technology for students; providing technical assistance, informing teams about maintenance and repair of equipment; planning for transition; and coordinating assistive technology services with local agencies.

In addition, assistive technology consultants train and support local teams as they implement low-tech and high-tech assistive technologies to enable students to attain IEP goals and meet the Pennsylvania Academic Standards.

Finally, AT consultants support teams as they integrate assistive technology into student’s curricula, which encourages student independence and participation in daily activities.

Assistive Technology support services are provided by the Capital Area Intermediate Unit to school districts in Cumberland, Dauphin, Perry and Northern York counties. To obtain Assistive Technology support, the School Age Referral Request Form and the AT Support Request Form/Questionnaire must be completed and sent to the CAIU.
