The spirit of giving filled Cumberland Golf Course in West Pennsboro Township, Cumberland County on Tuesday, July 27 as 84 men and women gathered to play golf and donate to a worthy cause. The 14th annual golf tournament took place to benefit a local organization, CAIU’s Champions for Children Foundation.

On Friday, May 14, Capital Area Intermediate Unit was proud to house the Regional Math 24 Invitational, a competition for students representing twenty-three schools in central Pennsylvania. Ninety-two students from the fourth and fifth grade competed in the competition. Senator Jeffrey E. Piccola awarded the winning individuals and teams.

On May 6, 2010, Capital Area School for the Arts (CASA) held its annual gala and performance. The event featured a silent art auction, Champion of Arts Education Award, and original student performances celebrating 150 years of Harrisburg history.

On April 21, 2010, Hershey High School participated in a videoconference administered by CAIU. The videoconference covered a timely topic -- "Ethics in Technology." Senator Piccola used the footage in his biweekly television series.

On February 18, 2010, West Creek Elementary School joined students from Steelton-Highspire Elementary and Central Dauphin's Northside Elementary Schools in a videoconference with sled dog mushers. This videoconference was made possible by the Capital Area Intermediate Unit. Li Kohr, Sen. Pat Vance's legislative assistant, also brought her two Siberian Huskies to the event to give students a hands-on experience.

On January 20, 2010, Senator Jeffrey E. Piccola stopped by for an official tour of the CAIU Enola facility. The tour will result in a two-part television show to be aired in March and April.

On November 16, 2009, Lynn Reinhart, a seventh grade science teacher from Shippensburg Area Middle School, was awarded the 2009 Thomas W. Holtzman, Jr. Educational Leadership Award. This award was created to honor an individual who exemplifies Dr. Holtzman's outstanding qualities as a leader in public education. Congratulations Lynn!

On Wednesday, September 23, 2009, the students and staff joined community and educational leaders to celebrate the official opening of the brand new Capital Area School for the Arts (CASA). After 11 years in tight quarters in the basement of the Salem United Church of Christ, the innovative school has a new 10,400 square foot home in Strawberry Square which focuses on the special needs of highly creative, talented students.

On September 10, 2009, Amy C. Morton, Executive Director of the Capital Area Intermediate Unit, joined Superintendents representing the school districts of the Capital Area Intermediate Unit and neighboring Intermediate Units, on the steps of the Pennsylvania State Legislature to highlight the impact of the state budget impasse on school district operations and express the need to retain the $300 million dedicated toward achieving equitable funding.

On July 29, 2009, The Champions for Children Foundation hosted its 13th Annual Champions for Children Golf Tournament. The annual golf tournament raises more than $10,000 per year. Funds are used directly to support student needs ranging from the acquisition of computers, clothing, and other materials, to medical expenses such as doctors' visits, medication or eye glasses.
