Thank you for your interest in pursuing a position as a guest (substitute) teacher. Many of the school districts/vo-techs in Dauphin, Cumberland, Perry, Northern York County and the Intermediate Unit participate in this program which has had great success over the past few years. We look forward to placing even more highly skilled individuals into classrooms in the coming school years.
The Guest Teacher Program is sponsored by the Capital Area Intermediate Unit. The program was created to find qualified personnel to work as "guest (substitute) teachers" to replace regular classroom teachers during training sessions and/or leave time.
Individuals wishing to participate in the program will be asked to submit the following to be considered for an interview:
- A completed Application and Preference Form that will need to be printed, completed and sent to the
Capital Area Intermediate Unit, Human Resources, 55 Miller Street, Summerdale, PA 17093-0489)

- A $75 non-refundable Check or Money Order payable to CAIU will be required with the application
The following items will need to be presented at the training. If not completed by the time of the training, you will still be able to attend the training however, you will not be able to substitute until all original documents are presented.
- Current Act 34 Clearance (PA Criminal Background Check) or proof of application thereof*
- Current Act 151 Clearance (Child Abuse Clearance) or proof of application thereof*
- Current Act 114 Clearance (Federal Fingerprinting) or proof of application thereof*
- A current medical examination and TB test as required by the Pennsylvania School Code
- Transcript showing proof of Bachelor's Degree* (A copy of the transcript is acceptable with the application. A sealed/official/unopened transcript will be required for the CAIU to submit your application to the PA Department of Education)
*Originals will be required at the Guest Teacher Training
If you are selected, you will be given additional information at the time of the interview regarding forms that will need to be completed for participation in the training program. Please do not give any paperwork to your interviewer.
Candidates will be required to successfully complete the interview process, three-day training session and, a one-day classroom visitation. The first two days of the training are full days 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. and the third day is a half-day session from 8:00 a.m. - noon.
During the training sessions, you will learn about professionalism, lesson planning, behavior/classroom management, special education, and you will be introduced to a "Bag of Tricks" to use in the classroom.
The $75 processing fee (which is required with the application) covers the cost of the application packet, three-day training session which includes coffee/tea in the morning, lunch (day one only; day two lunch will be on your own), and the Guest Teacher Manual. The fee also helps defray administrative costs including scanning and sending all paperwork to the school districts. The fee will be collected the first day of the training - cash, check or money order (payable to CAIU) will be accepted as payment.
Those who successfully complete the training, paperwork and all required clearances will be qualified to substitute in any subject area in the participating public school districts, all members of the Training Consortium and all equal opportunity employers. Attention Registered Nurses:
Registered nurses interested in becoming school nurse substitutes must complete the Guest Teacher Application, interview and training. Nurses will be required to pay an additional $40 fee (money order payable to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania), and provide "official" sealed transcripts showing proof of bachelor's degree along with a copy of their RN license in order to be approved as a school nurse substitute.
